Of A pot. Not THE pot. I never touch that stuff.
Here is a pot (you know, from pottery class) that is very special to me. Because Declan sat and laboriously rolled all the coils ("worms") for each of the spirals in the bowl. OK, I did a little "finessing" of the coils. But befinitely a joint effort.
Step 1: Roll coils, and place inside a bowl you want to mimic in size.
Step 2: Scrape the inside of the bowl VERY gently to make it flat while still keeping the coil shape intact on the side that is pressing into the mold.
Step 3: Wait till it's dry, lift the bowl out of the mold and sand out any mistakes. Usually a big part of the process for me.
Step 4: Fire once to make it stoneware.
Step 5: Glaze and pray that the color combinations you picked are decent together.
Step 6: Fire it one more time... VOILA!

Does this imply you have a kiln? I'm a fairly new reader so forgive me if I speak the obvious. But Chris will be so jealous...
Amy, I actually do have a kiln, it was Aunt Heidi's! - but it remains packed up in my garage. I go to a pottery studio and use their kilns and tools. Usually I go on Thursday nights for lessons, but also, Declan comes in with me sometimes on the weekends for free clay play time.

Wow! I'm quite impressed. My pots usually exploded in the kiln and I had to "creatively" interpret their designs as "happy accidents."
Let's not discuss the vast amounts of glaze stuck to the shelf of the kiln.
Hence, I was not a potter.
