American Idol: The Top 13

For those who don't know, I have been doing American Idol recaps for a few years now. I held off this time round till the top 12, errrr, 13, because it was just too big and overwhelming to do anything else. And I am glad I did, because I really love this group - really - there is no one I actually dislike, which is SO RARE. Usually I have at least 3-4 people at this stage that I want to stab with a fork. But nope. No one! Yay Season 8! I wasn't really sold on the new format, but maybe they actually knew what they were doing.

The bad news is, my recaps will be boring boring boring, and lacking snark. Ack. Or maybe I just really love Michael Jackson. Let's remember I was 12 when Thriller came out. It's like required for me to love the King of Pop. Even if he has turned into one of the biggest freaks on the planet.

So here we go.

LIL ROUNDS
The Way You Make Me Feel
She was great, she'll be around forever, love her voice. But absolutely positively *hated* her cotton candy over-the-shoulder shirt.

SCOTT MACINTYRE
Keep The Faith

That was, by far, the best we've seen him. To be politically incorrectly honest, up till this performance, I have been thinking if he wasn't blind, he wouldn't even be in the Top 13. This night was much better. Still, *someone* has to do *something* about his Art Garfunkel hair.

DANNY GOKEY
PYT (Pretty Young Thing)

Love love love love LOVE. Absolutely my #1 fave. Love his personality, his voice, his style. Love how he changed up the song, how he danced, how they finally didn't mention his dead wife, everything. And it doesn't hurt that PYT is my favorite Michael Jackson song ever.

MICHAEL SARVER
You Are Not Alone

I have to admit I never really took to this guy all through the prelims. I also have to admit he sang really well tonight. And he seems like a good guy. Meh OK fine. He can stay.

JASMINE MURRAY
I'll Be There
Clearly this year's stylist loves pink. And [DRINK!] Randy mentions working with Mariah Carey for the first time this season! Either way, this girl can SANG. Even if she does SANG like a 60 year old.

KRIS ALLEN
Remember The Time

I don't remember this kid having a Jason Mraz vibe (which I TOTALLY typed WAY before Randy said it), but I DIG HIM. I may just have to pick up the phone and vote for this guy.

Allison Iraheta
Give In To Me

Did they *really* just show that this girl has been singing in a FURNITURE STORE her whole life? Well OF COURSE. That totally explains the awesome sage presence and poise. And how that the huge voice just comes pouring out of her genes.

ANOOP DESAI
Beat It

OK, sure, not his best vocal, but here is another kid who is really likable. I think the judges were way harsh - but Anoop also runs the risk of getting a bit cocky. Hmmm. We'll see. I'm just glad he didn't sing My Prerogative again.

JORGE NUNEZ
Never Can Say Goodbye

I am still reeling from the judges trying to sanitize the Latino out of this guy. What the HELL what that about? Having said that, his performance tonight was fairly atrocious. So the good news is, we won't have to painfully watch the Whitening De La Jorge every week, he's most certainly going home tomorrow.

MEGAN JOY CORKREY
Rockin' Robin
OK, I was wrong. There *IS* one contestant I want to stab with a fork. Yeah, she is pretty, she has a nice voice, has great hair, an arm full of tattoos, but she also hula hoops through every performance and never uses her voice to it's fullest potential. Bleh.

ADAM LAMBERT
Black or White
First and foremost, something needs to be said.

After getting that off my chest, I don't dislike Adam, but I am not over the moon for him like everyone else, including the judges, seem to be. He is too theatrical, too 70's melodrama for me. Different strokes, I suppose.

MATT GIRAUD
Human Nature
I bet Matt was fairly intimidated after Paula pretty much crowned Adam as King of the Season 8 right before he had to go on, but I think he was freaking awesome. Of course, he won me over last week, with another MJ song, but he was even better behind the piano (dueling piano in da house)! This guy is a *close* second fave for me.

ALEXIS GRACE
Dirty Diana
Ooofff, she brought out my 10% gayness tonight. That was hot. Nuff said.

==================

Who is going home?
Certainly Jorge. Maybe Jasmine. It's too much to hope for to say Megan, but I'll say it anyway.

And you?

Photos pulled from the awesome Rickey.

I'm with ya on most of it! Except, Adam has a wierd appeal for me. I thought the exact same thing as you (kindy show choir-y, if ya kwim) but less eyeliner this week helped! :)

I think it is time for Jorge, Scott (politically correct or no), and possibly Lil to go home (though I know she won't, she was my least fav girl this week).

I think that the top 3 will be: Danny, Alexis and Adam.

They all deserve to be in the top 13 list of American Idol. We all saw how they worked hard to be there.

Okay, I mostly agree with what you've written here.
First things first: I've openly said that Danny Gokey is going to win this competition, and I still believe it. He has it all. He is one of a select few that I can close my eyes and imagine that I'm actually listening to the radio. At his first audition, I told my wife that he was going to win it. You heard it here first!

Lil - Awesome. Best female vocal is between she and pixie-dust hottie Alexis. (see below)
Scott- Not a huge fan. He can sing, but he needs a bit more polish to be at the top.
Michael- Love the guy, but I don't think this is his gig. I need to see more for a final opinion.
Jasmine- She is 90% there, but when she's off, she's off. I used to be a huge fan, but Lil's voice puts her to shame.
Kris- Cute, decent singer, but for me...forgettable. Meh.
Allison- Love her voice, and although I don't think she'll win, I think we'll be seeing more of her.
Anoop- Again, this is just not his gig. Goofy & fun, but I just can't see myself buying his albums or hearing him on the radio.
Jorge- He can sing, but he just comes across as too dramatic for me. I doubt he'll be here much longer.
Megan- Why, why, why doesn't someone show this girl that her little "dance" move is just no good? LOVE her voice, but it has a niche, and these theme nights are going to do her in pretty quickly, methinks. I'd love to hear her do some Amy Winehouse though...
Adam- What was up with the judge's adoration tonight? I thought this was his worst performance to date. I think hearing him sing Led Zeppelin would make me happy.
Matt- I'm digging this guy, and think both his voice and his look are a DEAD RINGER for Justin Timberlake. I think he'll do well, no matter what happens in the competition.
Alexis- Yummy. Perfect look, perfect voice, perfect stage presence. I think she'll make the top 3 at least.

Alexis and Lil are the best girls with Allison right behind. Alexis gets the nod because she has more originality. Allison though..true dark horse - she could sneak up there.

I admit it. I am an Adam fangirl. Spotted him early and I really don't give a rip if he wins or not. He'll have a record deal anyway like Daughtry. I've re-watched his performance 3 times now and I love it more each time.

It's interesting how his edginess and showmanship are getting him some slams, yet Alexis who packs a similar punch is getting complimented for it. Hmmmm... ;->

I don't dislike Danny, but I am not as over the moon for him as everyone. He doesn't draw me in.

As you said - it's all a matter of taste and subjectivity because they really did make a great choice on this group.

Megan and Anoop need to go. Could be Jasmine & Jorge tho'.

You. Me. One brain. I agree with you on all counts. I am annoyed by Megan, but the camera loves her. She has that Colby-Corinne-Bailey-Calais-Rae thing going on. Adam is the soft-goth love child of Christian Siriano's flatiron and Zac Efron, with a dash of Freddie Mercury; and yet, he's compelling to watch.

So glad you recapped it. Now I don't have to.

Matt and Allison are my top two faves followed closely by Lil and Danny.

Adam looks like Ewan McGregor's gay brother.

I want to make out with Alexis.

I hope Jasmine goes home. She's a snore.

Scott & Jasmine are my favorites so far. I'm glad to see that someone I like is writing about American Idol - I need my fix of talking about it, and none of my friends watch it!

I am torn between Kris Allen and Alexis!

And I've never, ever been this into Idol before...the world must be coming to an end or something! :) And I love it.

Great summary! For me, my faves this season are Lil Rounds and Danny. What's interesting about this season is that they seem to have a lot of compelling personal stories to go along with each of the singers. I wonder if they planned that.

Yay! Your AI recaps are back! I was wondering, and missing them. :-)

Going home: Jorge and Jasmine

I'm with you on Megan...hula hoops! You are genius with your analogies! She lives a few miles from me and I know too much back story on her (character issues) to like her.

LMAO! this is Great!
OK, I'm with you most of the way, reading along thinking to myself, "I would stab Megan", and then I see it..YES! LOL
She is beautiful, she has an interesting voice, doesn't know how to showcase it yet.
I'm also over Scott.
See, here's the thing I think most people miss, it's not that you can't sing, it's not that you're not talented, you're just not the AMERICAN IDOL! Teen pop star.
Many will get their *more* than 15 minutes, and will have some success, just not in THIS competition.
Michael has NO range. Jasmine disappoints again, and I wanted her to do better. Maybe next year.
My money is on Danny, Adam, and Lil. My top 3.
Jorge and Jazz will go. IMO

How can the judges say that Alexis' performance was over the top or self-indulgent and say that Adam was awesome?

So lame...

I've been looking forward to your recaps since last season! I'm with you on the bottom three, although they were so hard on Anoop that he might be the one to go.

Also- I can't get on board with Adam, he's just not for me, I guess.

Carla - great point about Alexis being over the top and not Adam, what the???

And WHEW you guys! I am glad you all want the recaps. I was waffling on doing them again. But once I was in the middle of it, it was like an old friend, ha!

Completely agree with Carla.

I don't understand all the hype about Adam. He shrieks his way to every song... some other people like Matt and Alexis have a much better control over their voices.

I am also not on the Adam Lambert boat. He is my mother's favorite and even my husband's favorite. But to me, he sort of looks like a really pretty and dramatic David Cook. I can not even discuss how HAPPY I am that Tatiana Del Toro didn't make it into the Top 13. I would have gotten a restraining order against her had I been forced to watch her anymore.
