Making The Move

Not sure if you have heard, but Blogger is forcing everyone who hosts their site elsewhere and FTPs the files in to now host with Google. Actually, you may have heard because I have been screaming about it for weeks. I am not thrilled. I am considering moving my blog to WordPress or Squarespace, or ??? And I know, yeah, yeah - should have done that forever ago - but I started out on Blogger, I like the simplicity, and I am not big on change.

And I really don't have time to deal with a *big* move right now - so we are doing the frakkin Blogger migration. In like 5 minutes. So Greeblemonkey may be wonky for the next few days.

In the meantime, who do you use, why, and are you happy?

Oh crap.

Well, I've been meaning to move my (sorely ignored) design blog from Blogger for a while. Crap.

I use Movable Type for Boston Mamas (great, since I'm a control freak re: layout) and Wordpress for my 8,327 other sites.

Did I already say crap?

Um.. WTF did I miss?

I have to leave Blogger? Seriously?

Suzanne - you don't have to leave Blogger - you only have to migrate if you FTP your files - this is a very small percentage which is why they are forcing us to do it. If you haven't been receiving notices for months, and/or do not have a HUGE warning in your dashboard right now - you are not affected. Sorry to scare you!

Christine - if you are getting the warning - you have till May 1.

(P.S. Google owns Blogger, so it is just migrating Blogger FTP sites to the Google servers, same tools)

I use Typepad, although my topline domain name really only redirects, so I can't truly weigh in on hosting issues. Still, it's had almost 100% uptime since 2004 when I started my blog, so I can't complain at all.

I'm like you in that I use Blogger because I've always used Blogger. I want to develop a bona fide website, and make my blog as accessible as possible, and possibly move to WordPress, but I really know nothing at ALL about any of that. Which I guess is the real reason I remain with Blogger. I know it, and I'm ignorant of the rest. Probably not the best reason.

I've been doing this for almost 3rs now, and I started out on my own URL using WordPress to edit....and I'm still here. I'm happy here. I love it here. I love WordPress. *I* think WordPress is super-simple, because I've never known anything else.

That being said, my personal Tech Support guy handles all my FTP gobbledy-gook on the back-end. (No, that's not a euphemism for anyhing.) ;)

He only has to do that stuff when I make major changes to themes, etc, so not very often. The daily posts are done from WordPress, by me, and it's worked out wonderfully so far.

Knock on wood.

Good luck finding a solution that works for you!!

I'm in the middle of a move from Blogger to WP. I like WP, have used it on other sites, so I'm fine with it and happy about a better commenting setup, but the move? I'm still missing a year of archives, and so much is askew, that I'm decidedly unhappy. You can't get from Point A to Point B.

I seeee you. :-)

I'm liking Squarespace, so far. A few weaknesses, but certainly less wonky with comments than Blogger was. I miss the whole FREE thing, but otherwise it's all good.

I've used squarespace, typepad, and wordpress.

I am starting a new fitness blog on wordpress soon - mostly b/c I use it for the other blogs (dailyburn and girlsintech303) that I manage.

I like the look and feel of squarespace, and the analytics rock.

Best of luck,
Invinciblekate

I use Squarespace and LOVE it. I almost switched to WordPress about 2 years ago, but Squarespace did a bunch of upgrades. Wouldn't dream of moving now. Very easy to use. Tons of customizable options. Easy to have ads in sidebar.

Good luck!

I'm with Typepad, and I'm ok with it, but I really can't figure out what's what with the others.

I'm intrigued with wordpress but not sure I can be bothered to use it.

I'm using Wordpress and have been really happy. I have a simple wordpress.com account though, not a self-hosted wordpress.org. I've heard Squarespace is really good too, that they have excellent customer service. Good luck!

I've used self-hosted wordpress went back to blogger simply because it's easier. (And I never had enough traffic to justify the monthly fee -- no matter how small). I really like blogger's new themes. Since I host at blogger, I don't know if they're available to those who don't, but I applaud them for designs nice enough to compete with typepad and wordpress.

Wordpress is easy to move files in and out of, if you decide to go there. One click, no headaches.

I am seeing everything now except some embedded stuff that was one my server. Need to sigure that out.

Actually think it would have gone smoother had I not picked a day that Blogger was having issues. More reason to think about WordPress!!!

Thanks for all your insights!

I have used WordPress (hosted on my own domains) for several of my blogs for years. I only used Blogger for my family photo blog, but have not touched it in some time.
