Up Close & Personal With Jewel

I have always liked Jewel - but I have to say I never really appreciated her until I saw her live. Which happened last Friday, at the Arvada Center here in Denver, a smallish outdoor amphitheater that was perfect for Jewel to belt out her songs with her big, amazing voice.

Not only did we get to see Jewel perform, we got to go backstage with about 50 other lucky fans, meet her, have our photo taken with her, ask her questions, and hear her sing a song just for us.

Us with Jewel

When Country Financial asked me to attend Jewel's Denver stop on the Trips and Picks tour, I didn't quite understand that I was seeing the future of concert-going.

Let me explain. Because, while I certainly enjoyed the concert, coming from an advertising background - I thought the promotion and experience for concert-goers was a win-win stroke of genius.

First of all, fans can purchase a VIP backstage package, where you hang out with Jewel - and get drinks and appetizers - HELLO, AWESOME. There are not many bands I would pay the steep ticket price for - but if it is your FAVORITE musician? OF COURSE YOU WOULD. Awesome.

Next. The people next to us text messaged during the opening act and won an upgrade to front row. So smart and awesome.

Also, Jewel recorded our show, and on our way out, we handed over $20 for a card with a code on it. I thought we would get a few songs - but NOPE. I now have the ENTIRE concert in my iTunes after a simple download. Double triple awesome.

And while we are talking about awesome - Jewel herself was adorable. Funny, self-effacing and extremely personable. I highly enjoyed both the music and her personality.

Case in point: POLKA!

Or. Would you like to hear about her family history? I was entranced. And then the song that follows was downright awesome.

How many times have I said "awesome" now? But she so was.

Like when it was my turn for a question, I asked how she dealt with the backlash as she changes up her style all the time. She said she likes when music shows all sides of a person, that when you look in a closet you don't just see jeans or business suits or skirts - you see all sorts of things.

I dug that. Then I told her one of my favorite songs of hers was Intuition.

After that, she sang a song to us privately, an unreleased song about a friend she lost to cancer, with lyrics like she "had a hole in her heart the shape of you." Given what has been going on with my mom, her being diagnosed with lung cancer recently, of course I cried. Big drippy tears.

My closet was full that night.

Fun. Grownup Jewel is just as cute as hippytrippy younger Jewel.

I've lead a semi-charmed life and have been lucky enough to meet a whole bunch of performers, but there are still a few people I get starstruck about and would pay extra for: James Taylor, Patty Griffin, Tori Amos, Dave Matthews, Counting Crows, and Alanis Morissette (this list narrows down my age to approx a 5 year window, I believe).

Oh, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. I would TOTALLY party with them.

It sounds like you had an amazing time! What an experience to be able to talk to a developed artist about their craft. Also nothing wrong with a bunch of "awesomes" :) PS: I am hoping that your mom kicks the cancers bum clear across the globe!!

I pulled out her first CD this past weekend and have been listening to it ever since! I think it would be great to have this type of concert experience, and would totally pay extra to see musicians I love!
